About the Editors

The editors comprises three generations of researchers all with a passion for understanding and describing the physical world.

Deon Marais holds a B.Eng in computer and electronics and an M.Eng and Ph.D.  in nuclear engineering from the North-West University, South Africa. In 2009 he started his career as a nuclear software engineer on high temperature gas cooled reactor projects whereafter he moved to Necsa (South African Nuclear Energy Corporation) SOC Ltd where he became responsible for the data acquisition & control, reduction and visualisation systems of the neutron diffraction facility. He is also an instrument scientist on the MPISI neutron strain scanner.

Thomas M. (Tom) Holden received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. from Leeds University in England. He began working in the field of neutron scattering during post-doc positions at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, Harwell and at Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories in Canada. In 1966 he joined the staff of Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) and studied magnetism until the 1980’s. In 1983 he began working on measurements of residual stress and texture in engineering components and materials by neutron diffraction. In 1998 he retired from AECL and since then has consulted in Australia, the Netherlands, Japan, Korea, the United States and South Africa.

Andrew M. Venter received his qualifications up to the level of Ph.D.  from the Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg) and has an an extra-ordinary professorship with the North-West University in South Africa. He is a scientific group leader at Necsa and an National Research Foundation of South Africa rated research scientist with more than 30 years’ experience in neutron and X-ray diffraction techniques. He has been responsible for the establishment of world-class neutron and X-ray diffraction facilities at Necsa in support of material science studies in South Africa.
