Toward greener aerospace materials: Asymmetric electromagnetic response of bio-based honeycomb structures

Abstract. Honeycomb based composite structures are heavily used in various areas particularly in aerospace and defense industry because of its light weight and high mechanical strengths. In this study, one side of a honeycomb structure was coated with a commercial radar absorbing paint. Although various shapes of honeycomb designs are available, hexagon geometry was used for the structure while paper was used as materials. Application of such coatings on honeycomb-based structures can provide highly efficient electromagnetic absorption. In this way an asymmetrical electromagnetic response was achieved. By using the suggested structure, the transmission coefficient remains close to 0 dB across the investigated frequency band indication very low insertion loss and nearly full transmission. To perform the design, electromagnetic characterization of the absorber paint was conducted using Agilent brand dielectric probe in the frequency range of 1-20 GHz. Using the electrical permittivity and magnetic permeability values, one side of the honeycomb structure was coated with the paint using various thicknesses. Depending on the application requirements, the absorption frequency can be adjusted by simply changing the thickness value of the coating. The simulation results are obtained in terms of absorption performance in terms of frequency and the correlation of the absorption frequency in terms of the coating thickness. In addition, the full transmission from one side was also added to show that the system operates in an asymmetrical way. This approach will provide directive radar absorption while keeping the light weight of the structure. Furthermore, the amount of coating used for absorption is much less compared to a full coating. Future studies can be performed using different shapes and materials for manufacturing honeycomb structure.
