About the Editors
Ciarán Mc Goldrick is an Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College Dublin. He holds a PhD in Engineering from Trinity College Dublin (1998) and has also held Visiting Professor positions at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA). He is a Senior Member of both the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM).
His current research focuses on security and cryptography in both highly scalable and highly constrained devices and settings, and on the timely and responsive communication and control of mobile and actuatable physical devices and settings. He has a strong record in the translation of conceptual research into real systems and realisations, and has been Chief Scientist in a ‘high potential’ startup in the financial services domain.
He is or has been an advisor to many National and International bodies and agencies, employing both his Research expertise and his strong and enduring commitment to excellence and impact through Learning and Education. He is the Irish representative involved in the definition and formation of future International curricula and standards for graduate education in Networking and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning.
Professor Mc Goldrick has co-ordinated, and been in involved in, several EU projects including ICONN, SYSWIND, OCTALIS and ArtWeb. He currently assists the European Commission in various capacities with their proposal assessment and award mandate. He has been awarded as one of “Ireland’s Champions of EU Research” by an Irish Government agency for his success and contributions in this space.
Meriel Huggard has been a tenured faculty member in the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), Ireland since September 2000. She was a visiting Associate Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Bucknell University in 2016. She holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science and a B.A.(Mod) in Theoretical Physics from Trinity College Dublin.
Prof. Huggard’s technical research interests incorporate network performance, autonomous and ubiquitous systems. She is also active in the field of engineering education where she is an editor of the IEEE Education Society section of IEEE Access. She is currently an elected member of the IEEE Education Society board of governors.
Her valuable and impactful research has been supported by competitive grant awards from international and national funding bodies, including the European Commission, Science Foundation Ireland and the Irish Higher Education Authority. Prof. Huggard has a broad portfolio of community engagement, including as an external expert reviewer for the European Commission and as a reviewer for a wide range of professional journals and conferences. She is a senior member of both the IEEE and the ACM.
Biswajit Basu is a Professor in the School of Engineering at Trinity College Dublin. He holds a PhD in Engineering from IIT Kanpur (1998) and a Dr. rer. Nat. in Mathematical Physics from University of Vienna (2019). He has also held positions as a Visiting Scholar and Visiting Professor at Rice University USA, a Guest Professor at Aalborg University Denmark, a Senior Marie Curie Fellow at Plaxis BV Netherlands, a Distinguished Guest Professor at Tongji University China and a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, India.
He has pioneered the development of time-frequency and wavelet-based algorithms for identification, nonstationary response and control of time-varying and non-linear systems and has published widely in these areas. His current research focuses on nonlinear PDEs, nonlinear hydrodynamics with application to ocean (wind and wave) energy generation and oceanography, and quantum computing with application to machine learning, fluid dynamics, optimization and control.
He is or has been an Editor/Associate Editor or a member of Editorial board of prestigious journals such as Journal of Structural Engineering, American Society of Civil Engineers; IEEE Trans on Sustainable Energy; Journal of Multi-body Dynamics, Institution of Mechanical Engineers UK; Int. J. Structural Control and Health Monitoring.
He has co-ordinated or has been in involved in several EU projects such as NOTES, SYSWIND, UMBRELLA, INDICATE, ICONN and EINSTEIN. He has received several awards of which notable are: President of Ireland EU FP7 Research Champion Award in 2013, Kobori Award for Structural Control in 2014 from the Int. Association of Structural Control and Monitoring and Phil Doak Award from the Institute of Sound & Vibration Research, Southampton in 2015.
