Abstract. The effect of extreme accelerations, namely 102 g, 103 g, and 104 g, on the intensity of the sonic boom generated by a circular cylinder accelerated from rest to a Mach number equal to 5 is investigated by a numerical simulation that uses a moving-body immersed boundary methodology, allowing to naturally capture the pressure level fluctuations generated over nearby stationary observers positioned in the opposite and orthogonal directions relative to the cylinder velocity. The compressible and unsteady Euler equations are numerically solved in a computational domain that is discretized using a finite-volume formulation. The cylinder moves through a regular Cartesian mesh where specific boundary conditions are applied to the immersed boundary volumes during the acceleration period. These boundary conditions are associated with the effect of the acceleration levels on the thermodynamic gradients in the normal direction over the surface of the cylinder. The numerical results show that the acceleration levels significantly influence the amplitude of the sonic boom measured by a stationary observer positioned in the opposite direction to the movement of the cylinder. However, they also show that the acceleration levels do not have any measurable influence on the intensity of the sonic boom measured by a stationary observer positioned in a direction orthogonal to the cylinder velocity.
