Abstract. This study presents a nonlinear vibration-based framework for early damage identification in viscoelastic sandwich structures with interfacial delamination. Unlike conventional frequency-based indicators, the proposed approach exploits changes in modal damping, which exhibit higher sensitivity to small and localized defects. Both global damping effects arising from the viscoelastic core and local dissipation due to frictional contact at delaminated interfaces are modeled within a combined time–frequency domain analysis. Nonlinear phenomena, including superharmonic responses, are explicitly captured to improve agreement with experimentally observed behavior. The results demonstrate that pseudo-modal damping parameters provide a robust and reliable indicator for detecting early-stage interfacial damage.
