Experimental Characterization of Ageing Phenomena in Li-Po Battery Packs for Lightweight UAV Applications

Abstract. The performance of electric UAVs largely depends on the efficiency of their onboard energy storage systems. In battery-powered propulsion, maximizing battery life and flight time is a key function of the Battery Management System (BMS). This study presents an ageing test campaign to characterize the State of Health (SOH) of a Li-Po battery pack. The tests use a current load profile derived from a flight simulator that models UAV longitudinal dynamics, propulsion, and onboard systems for realistic current demand. When predefined ageing indicators, such as reduced end-of-mission voltage variation, exceed set thresholds, Hybrid Pulse Power Characterization (HPPC) tests are conducted to characterize the battery at different ageing states. The resulting parameters support dynamic battery modelling at various ageing stages.
