Abstract. More than 70% of metal powder production is aimed at the automotive industry because its use saves energy, can improve material performance, can produce flexible designs, and save costs. Small and round shaped powders provide advantages in terms of high flowability and material density. However, the cost for producing small and round shape of SS316L powder is very expensive compared to large and uneven shape of powder. Therefore, bimodal particles were introduced to overcome these problems. For this paper, the study emphasizes on the effect of bimodal mixture size and sintering time on the necking size between the particles. SS316L spherical shape steel powder with size of 5µm, 30 µm and 50 µm was mixed with uneven shape 100 µm powder size with a ratio of 75:25 and the binder used was stearic acid and Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) with a ratio of 5% of the total feedstock. Then, the mixture was compressed before sintered under various sintering holding time of 1 hour, 2 hours and 3 hours. Studies have found that sintering time plays a very important role in producing interparticle neck formation. This is because the 3-hour sintering time for 100-5 µm mixed powders produces the largest particle neck size compared to 100-50 µm. However, the smallest necking formed under 100-50 µm bimodal mixture due to wedging effect. The necking size for 100-50 µm for 3 hours was found out to be smaller than 100-5 µm for 1 hours. Thus, particle distribution plays a bigger role in the necking formation.
