Tailoring spinel and Aurivillius-based phases for passive cooling applications in urban infrastructure and automotives

Abstract. Spinel and Aurivillius phases represent an important class of materials. Spinel and Aurivillius-based phases offer great promise for passive cooling due to their structural stability, high NIR reflectance, and tunable optical properties. This paper highlights tailoring these phases, focusing on the design of synthesis strategies, energy efficiency, and environmental compatibility. Their integration into cool coatings can significantly reduce heat absorption, lower cooling costs, and support sustainable, climate-resilient construction and mobility solutions. Special attention is given to their optical performance, synthesis routes, stability, and potential for environmentally sustainable implementation in urban infrastructure and automotive coatings.
