Abstract: Hydrogen fuel cells are effective, produce no emissions, and have many applications, yet they are becoming a front-runner clean energy choice in the world’s sustainable energy transition. There are, however, several significant barriers that need to be alleviated before hydrogen fuel cells can become a mass-use technology, such as high costs, insufficient infrastructure, and technical challenges with producing and storing hydrogen. With focus on PEMFCs and SOFCs, the present study analyzes the status of hydrogen & fuel cell technology and evaluates the major methods of hydrogen production, such as electrolysis, steam methane restructuring, and biomass gasification. The report further analyzes the issues in storage and transit, material developments in fuel cells, and transportation and generation case studies. Priority is given to measures to reduce expenses, enhance system resilience, and create infrastructure to support the transition to a global hydrogen economy.
