Over the past decades, there has been significant interest in producing polymer nanofibers from various polymeric materials, with applications ranging from flexible devices to biomedical materials. Electrospinning is a flexible processing technique that allows the processor to produce polymer nanofibers with diameters ranging from a few microns to hundreds of nanometres. This technique offers the advantage of modifying polymers at the nanoscale. Recently, a wide variety of flame-retardant (FR) additives have been incorporated into electrospun polymeric materials to enhance their fire resistance performance. This interest is driven not only by the desire to broaden the applications of electrospun nanofibers but also by the need to address the number of fire accidents that result in loss of life and property. This chapter describes recent advances in the use of FR additives in electrospun polymeric materials. It discusses the preparation of nanofibrous membranes, their flame resistance properties, and their applications.
