Microwave-Assisted Bioactive Heterocycles: Applications in Medicinal Chemistry
Shraddha Gautam, Kalpana Swain, Satyanarayan Pattnaik
This chapter explores the use of microwave-assisted organic synthesis (MAOS) for the rapid and eco-friendly synthesis of bioactive heterocycles, including pyrimidines, quinazolines, indoles, thiazoles, oxazoles, and imidazoles. MAOS enhances reaction rates, yields, and selectivity while reducing energy consumption and solvent use, aligning with green chemistry principles. Each class of heterocycle discussed plays a significant role in medicinal chemistry, with applications spanning anticancer, antiviral, antimicrobial, and CNS therapies. Comparative advantages over conventional synthesis are highlighted, along with key methodologies and reaction mechanisms, underscoring MAOS as a transformative tool in the design of novel therapeutic agents.
