Microwave-Assisted vs Conventional Synthesis: An Overview

H. Chenni, H. Kerras, N. Outili

Microwave assisted synthesis offers a modern alternative to conventional heating by directly coupling electromagnetic energy with reactants, resulting in rapid heating. This approach accelerates reaction rates, improves selectivity, and reduces energy consumption. Compared to conventional methods, based on long heat transfer times. However, microwave synthesis enhances the process efficiency and supports green chemistry. To provide an overview of this challenge on microwave technology, a bibliometric study of scientific publications between 2014-2024 was conducted, developing significant growth and increasing the interest in microwave methods through various applications such as organic, nano-materials, and pharmaceuticals. This study highlights the transformative potential of microwave synthesis for enhancing sustainability in both academic and industrial scales.
