Effect of Corrosion S255J Steel in Birds’ Slurry Water Solution
Tomasz Lipiński, Jacek Pietraszek
Abstract. Construction materials operate in various environmental conditions. Some operate in natural conditions, exposed to both the natural atmosphere and, among other things, bird droppings. These droppings, located near vines, constituted corrosive material. To ensure the homogeneity of this material and its changing chemical composition over time, it was dried and hydrated immediately before testing. The tests were conducted on typical structural steel with enhanced mechanical properties, specifically grade S355J, which is typically used for structures exposed to the type of corrosion tested. The tests were conducted on an unprotected surface by immersion in hydrated bird droppings for 384 hours, with samples analyzed every 48 hours. The results of the tests presented equations for the corrosion rate of steel in the hydrated bird droppings environment, along with their graphical representations. It was found that the corrosion rate did not change significantly during the first 144 hours, while after this soaking period, the corrosion rate of the samples changed in direct proportion to the passage of time. In the tested time range of 348 hours, no stabilization of the corrosion rate was observed in the tested corrosive environment.
