Corrosion Influencing Factors: Environmental, Material and Electrochemical Perspectives

N. Muthukumaran, B. Arulmurugan, V. Manoj Mohan Prasath, G. Kausalya Sasikumar, Rajender Boddula

Corrosion compromises the structural integrity of metals, presenting difficulties across various industries. This chapter examines environmental elements that affect corrosion, emphasizing exposure conditions, temperature, humidity, and chemical environments. Marine and industrial environments with elevated chloride levels and contaminants exhibit heightened corrosion rates, whereas rising temperatures and humidity intensify material degradation. Chemical exposures induce localized and uniform degradation through complex reactions. Case studies emphasize these repercussions, illustrating the importance of understanding these factors to develop effective prevention strategies. This chapter focuses on the fundamental principle of metal preservation for future use, highlighting the essential importance of corrosion science in maintaining durability.
