Ethical Considerations for Nanotechnology Applications in Biology
Naresh Kumar, Jaspreet Kaur, Brij Bala, Jibanananda Mishra
Nanotechnology has surfaced as a rapidly progressing field with numerous applications in biology, including molecular detection and manipulation, bio- and non-bio interface devices and materials, and drug delivery agents. However, the ethical considerations surrounding the applications of nanotechnology in biology are of paramount importance, as they encompass a range of issues. One of the key ethical considerations in nanotechnology is the potential impact on human health and the environment. The ethical implications of nanotechnology in biology have been a subject of debate for many years. The potential risks and benefits associated with different applications of nanotechnology and the need for responsible governance and oversight of nanotechnology in biology are major ethical considerations for researchers and policymakers. Furthermore, the social and cultural dimensions of nanotechnology ethics cannot be overlooked. Addressing questions related to malevolent uses, equitable access, control, and decision-making, as well as privacy and human integrity, are essential in ensuring responsible development and utilization of nanotechnology. By addressing these ethical considerations, we can promote the responsible and sustainable use of nanotechnology in biology. This chapter aims to provide an overview of the ethical considerations for nanotechnology applications in biology.
