Transition-Metal Based Catalyst for Petrochemistry
Rupam Chatterjee, Subhajit Kundu, Debarati Mitra
Petrochemistry is a study focused on the conversion of crude petroleum into useful raw materials for various industries as well as their transformation into valuable end products namely fuels and petrochemicals. These transformations are achieved by applying various physical and chemical processes. The myriad of chemical changes, which transpires in these processes, often require the aid of various catalysts for the purpose of hastening up the chemical reaction as well as to improve the conversion and yield of desired products. In petrochemistry, earth abundant transition metals such as iron, cobalt, nickel, molybdenum, aluminium, tungsten and zirconium find applications. Some of the catalytic processes utilizing transition metal catalyst in petroleum refining industry include hydrotreatment, reforming, and catalytic cracking, while in the petrochemical industry, they catalyze mainly polymer and organic solvent synthesis. The transition metal catalysts used in the well-established processes in petrochemistry along with emerging technologies utilizing the same category of catalysts are discussed in this book chapter. The nature of a catalyst is not only determined by the transition metal used but also on the characteristics of the support materials which is also addressed in this chapter.
