Earth-Abundant Metals in Chemical Industries

Puspendu Choudhury, Mriganka Sekhar Manna, Soma Nag

Earth-abundant metals, viz., iron, cobalt, nickel, manganese, copper, zinc, etc. have provided great industrial and economic growth for prolonged time. The substantial availability of these metals in the Earth’s crust and the lower costs of extraction trigger widespread applications of them in civil engineering, chemical and manufacturing industries, and the energy sector. The pivotal role in various applications, in manufacturing materials, chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, biological activities, catalysis, and energy storage, has become evident through significant modifications and chemical transformations of these metals. The recent advances in catalysis, synthesis of new chemicals, applications as biosensors and cofactors of crucial biomolecules, green chemistry, and energy storage have been illustrated in this chapter.
