Properties and Corrosion Behaviours of Different Types of Superalloys
Anirudh Pratap Singh Raman, Pallavi Jain, Sunil Kumar Yadav, Prashant Singh
This chapter delves into the properties and corrosion behaviours of different types of superalloys, specifically nickel-based, cobalt-based, and iron-based superalloys. These materials are crucial in power generation, high-temperature, aerospace, and automotive industries because of their exceptional mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. The chapter discusses the primary corrosion mechanisms affecting these superalloys, including general corrosion, crevice corrosion, intergranular corrosion, stress corrosion cracking (SCC), high-temperature oxidation, and hot corrosion. It also explores how factors such as alloy composition, microstructure, and environmental conditions influence corrosion resistance. Recent advancements in alloy development, including the incorporation of new elements and innovative processing techniques, are highlighted. The chapter concludes by identifying ongoing challenges and future research directions aimed at enhancing the corrosion resistance of superalloys, thereby broadening their applications and improving their performance in demanding environments.
