Opportunities and Challenges of Superalloys for Coating
Anupama Rajput, B K Bhuyan, Prachika Rajput
Superalloys, also referred to as high-performance alloys, have an interesting past that stems from the requirement for materials that can endure harsh environments. In many high-temperature applications, such as gas turbines, power plants, and jet engines, they are indispensable. Therefore, underlying one of the applications i.e. super alloys are often used in coatings to protect components like air turbines from extreme temperatures and harsh environments. Nickel is the most used metal which is used as a combinant in the formulation of super alloys owing to its high temperature withstand behaviour. The further modification and types include cobalt based superalloys; copper-nickel based super alloys, etc. This chapter discusses the overview of types of super alloys, types of respective coatings and methods of formulation that impact the various essential properties like high temperature stability, redox resistance and creep resistance.
