Abstract. The utilization of aluminium alloy in aerospace, automotives, and marine industrial applications is ever increasing. As aluminium is lighter in weight, corrosive resistance and less costly compared to other alloys. A green welding process is named friction stir welding is extremely used for joining similar and dissimilar materials. The process uses non consumable tool to produce frictional heat without melting base material. In FSW process parameters such as tool shoulder diameter, rotational speed, welding speed and tilt angle do major role in obtaining better quality joints. In this review paper FSW joint characteristics of AA 8xxx alloys have been studied and focused on mechanical and microstructural properties. In addition, this study reports the formation fine grains in weld joints. FSW joint exhibits better strength without heat affected zone. Formation of fine grains is noticed in FSW microstructure attributed to stirring action of FSW tool.
