Abstract. The consolidation of carbon fibre-reinforced thermoplastics is a challenge for the manufacturing of high performance composites, especially for the aeronautics field. Although the effects of pressure and temperature on the quality of consolidation have been widely demonstrated, the understanding of the phenomena occurring during consolidation remains partial. Based on previous developments, this work presents a hot press device specifically designed and fabricated for the in-situ observation of consolidation by X-Ray microtomography. A good correlation is found between the evolution of void content and the measure of the sample through-thickness strain obtained by LVDT sensors.
