Abstract. Cutting tool wear remains a major issue affecting productivity and surface quality. To limit its consequences, cutting fluids are still widely used in industry. However, while their economic and environmental impacts are significant concerns, their exact influence under severe contact conditions is still not well understood is still not well understood in cutting operations. Therefore, there is a need to develop dedicated approaches to characterize their ability to lubricate, reduce friction, and ultimately, reduce wear. While specific setups have been developed to mimic the contact conditions in machining, simpler test configurations are of interest to perform quick and qualitative comparisons. Moreover, the correlation between the cutting fluid performance and fundamental physical properties has not been thoroughly investigated.
