Design and analysis of a wall-mounted collapsable basketball post

S.N. Hemanth, M.H. Sachhidananda

Abstract. The basketball game is one of the popular indoor games and is practiced across many schools and colleges. A variety of designs and models are available in the basketball post design. To utilize the sports indoor ground area for other sports activities, foldable, movable, wall mounted, etc., are popular. In the open source, one can find many models, however, a detailed design analysis are very limited. The present work reports a design and simulation analysis of a wall-mounted collapsible type basketball post.. The collapsible mechanism is developed using SolidWorks. Considering the dead load of the entire unit and the dunking load of the player on the structure, structural elements are designed and modeled. Structural stress analysis is carried out on the Ansys platform. It is noticed that induced stresses at the salient points are well within the safe stress. The overall weight of the structure is around 800 kg. The paper reports the detailed procedure followed and the dimensions of the structure. Results of the stress analysis at salient points are reported. As an extension of the work, optimization is planned using Altair software.
