Assessment of critical material requirements for renewable energy systems and green hydrogen production in India
Ekta JAKHAR, K.A. SUBRAMANIAN
Abstract. This study deals with the assessment of critical materials required for the production of green hydrogen from solar energy. The current solar photovoltaic installed capacity of India is 71.61 GW, and it stands fourth globally in solar power generation. The critical materials identified for solar energy are silicon, aluminium, and galvanized iron whereas for Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer are platinum, iridium, aluminium, graphite, and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). For alkaline electrolyzer, the only crucial critical materials are nickel and aluminium. India has a surplus amount of aluminium, graphite, and iron. But, it is required to increase the materials‘ mining. The reserve of Nickel is also high in India but still depends on imports of nickel. So in-house mining is required for nickel on a large scale. India has the potential to meet the required critical material needed for renewable energy by enhancement of critical materials mining.
