Natural risks and resilience of vernacular architecture: The case of the Medina of the City of Larache
SALOUI Chaimae, ADIDI Abdelaziz
Abstract. Larache, the capital of its province, is a city with remarkable potential in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region. It is situated along the Tangier–Kenitra axis, which has seen significant economic growth due to major international trade routes, including air and port connections. Despite its strategic location, Larache, particularly represented by its vernacular architecture and traditional housing in the medina, is evolving in a direction that prompts further reflection. Currently, the vernacular architecture of Larache’s medina is a key element of its cultural heritage, reflecting local traditions and techniques adapted to environmental conditions. Unfortunately, this architectural wealth is often overlooked and threatened by natural risks that diminish its value and functionality. Today, there is a growing need to redirect urban planning towards developing strategies that protect the integrity of these structures while addressing natural risks. In this way, the old medina can become a model for the preservation and enhancement of vernacular architecture, while reinforcing local identity and promoting sustainable tourism.
