Hydrography as a guide to reading the urban form of the Medina of Fez

Abstract. The urban morphological evolution of the Medina of Fez is examined through the lens of hydrography, from the Idrisid period to the contemporary era. The analysis reveals how hydraulic systems have shaped urban development, influencing spatial organization, socio-economic structures, and cultural practices. The research highlights the symbiotic relationship between water management and urban planning, demonstrating a diachronic narrative of adaptation and resilience. The exploration of transformations in water management practices over the centuries illustrates how hydrological considerations have facilitated or hindered urban morphological evolution. The importance of hydrography as a determining factor in the development of Fez is emphasized, offering perspectives on the adaptability of urban spaces in the face of environmental and sociopolitical changes.
