A study of the micro-geometric errors of tangentially turned surfaces using the design of experiments method

István SZTANKOVICS

Abstract. The increase of machining efficiency is a main goal and a complex task for the production engineering in the industrial environment, while the prescribed surface quality must be maintained. The tangential turning procedure offers a solution while achieving high feeds (thus lowering the machining time), where the roughness of the machined surface can reach its required low value. In this study, several parameters of the roughness profile are analyzed on tangentially machined surfaces. The experimental setups are planned and carried out following the method of Design of Experiments. The results showed that among the key process parameters, the feed of the cutting tool has the most meaningful effect on the surface roughness in tangential turning.
