Additive Manufacturing of Metals and Ceramics Directory and Who is Who!
Additive manufacturing, sometimes colloquially referred to as 3-dimensional printing or even as layered manufacturing, is a relatively new, flexible and increasingly important process for manufacturing or repairing structural components. Its use in ‘rapid prototyping’, using polymers as the building materials, is now fairly routine. Its use for building components out of metal alloys is of rapidly growing interest, but the very different properties of metals, as compared with those of polymers, mean that many problems remain to be solved. The 3-dimensional printing of thermoplastics is highly advanced and can easily create complex products, while the 3-dimensional printing of metals is still limited; the obvious snag being that the temperature-softening of thermoplastics into a readily formable state is absent in the case of metals.
